A viral claim of deliberate cat abandonment on Malaysian highways has sparked outrage as netizens question whether pet owners are knowingly condemning animals to death.
A THREADS discussion about cats found on highways has triggered criticism online after one user condemned the alleged abandonment of animals in dangerous locations and questioned the lack of compassion shown towards them.
The discussion began when a Threads user shared that they had seen a dead cat while driving and wondered how animals end up on busy highways.
“This morning, while driving, I saw a dead cat on the highway. It made me wonder how cats end up on highways in the first place,” the user wrote.
The user later claimed to have come across a TikTok video allegedly showing someone abandoning a cat along the North Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) before driving away.
According to the post, the video showed a motorist with a dashcam stopping by the roadside to rescue the cat, which was reportedly still alive and struggling.
The original post expressed sadness over seeing animals placed in dangerous situations and questioned why some people would abandon their pets instead of seeking safer alternatives.
The user also raised broader concerns about animal abandonment and the responsibilities of pet owners.
The discussion prompted many netizens to share their own experiences and opinions.
One user said they had previously believed cats found on roads were often victims of accidents, such as climbing into vehicles before falling out, but recent incidents had changed their perspective.
“Humans can be truly wicked!” the user commented.
Another netizen said they had once assumed cats on highways had accidentally escaped during transport, but felt the alleged video described in the discussion suggested deliberate abandonment.
“It was blatantly obvious the cat was thrown out rather than jumping voluntarily,” the user wrote.
Others expressed sadness over the number of animals killed on roads.
One commenter said they had also seen a dead cat near a highway and believed that while some cases could still be accidental, witnessing animals being struck by vehicles was deeply upsetting.
Another user questioned whether abandoning a cat on a highway amounted to condemning it to death, asking: “Did they intend for the cat to die?”
The commenter described the alleged act as a serious failure of responsibility towards animals.
