In the early hours of today, tragedy struck at Kilometer 198 of the North-South Highway (northbound), claiming the life of a 17-year-old female tourist and leaving five other passengers injured, two of whom suffered severe burns. The incident occurred around 3:50 am when an express bus, carrying 28 passengers from Singapore and India to Kuala Lumpur, collided with a motorcycle. The aftermath of this heartbreaking event sheds light on the importance of road safety and emergency response measures.
According to Alor Gajah district police chief Superintendent Arshad Abu, the motorcycle, ridden by a 21-year-old man, had skidded earlier, ending up in the far-left lane. The bus, unable to avoid the obstacle, collided with the motorcycle and dragged it until both vehicles caught fire. Despite prompt emergency services response, the bus and motorcycle were completely engulfed in flames.
The accident resulted in five passengers, including those seated at the back, being trapped and injured due to the fire. Among the injured were Peer Mohamed Kannudeen, 69, and Anissa Begum Fakrudin Hussaini, 45, both suffering severe burns. Additionally, Mohideenmeraal Beermohamed, 68, and Tasmiyah Taj, 19, sustained minor injuries. Thankfully, the remaining 23 passengers, as well as the 24 and 46-year-old drivers, emerged unharmed.
The Fire and Rescue Department, responding swiftly to the 3:55 am call, deployed 21 members to extinguish the fire. Despite their efforts, Yafarah Taj Fakrudin Hussaini succumbed to her burns while being treated at Alor Gajah Hospital. The deceased's body was subsequently transported to Melaka Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
As investigations continue in accordance with Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, this tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and enhanced safety measures on our roadways. The collaboration of emergency response teams is crucial in minimizing the impact of such incidents, highlighting the significance of continued efforts in promoting road safety awareness and implementing preventive measures.
