The increasing involvement of women in drug trafficking — particularly of heroin (chitta) and hashish (charas) — within the jurisdictions of Indora and Damtal police stations in Nurpur’s interstate border district has become a matter of concern.
Despite arrests, court convictions and imprisonment of drug peddlers, the illegal trade continues unabated, prompting authorities to ramp up enforcement efforts.
As per police information, 64 NDPS Act cases have registered in Nurpur police district from January to June 22 in which 112 drug peddlers, including 12 women, were arrested.
Intensifying the anti-chitta campaign, the Nurpur district police recently arrested three drug peddlers, including two women hailing from neighbouring Punjab, under Indora police station. Following a tip-off, the police conducted a raid at a house at Tamota village. During the search, the team seized 39.14 gm heroin (chitta).
As per the police investigation, an interstate drug peddling network was being run by house owner Kalpana (27). The team arrested Kalpana and her elder sister Gulfam alias Rita (32) and her brother-in-law Pawan Kumar (36), residents of Balagan village under Dasuya police station in Hoshiarpur district (Punjab).
Nurpur SP Kulbhushan Verma said the contraband was seized and all three members of the interstate drug peddling racket were arrested by Indora police. A case under Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused.
