A 21-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi lost his life after reportedly drowning while bathing in the Riyagadi rivulet near Kamand in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Sunday.

Upon reaching the location, police found that residents had already managed to pull the youth out of the water. However, he was found unconscious at the scene.

The deceased was identified as Vipin Kumar, a resident of Old City Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. Vipin was pursuing B.Tech at IIT Mandi and was residing in Nako Hostel, South Campus, Kamand.

He was immediately shifted to Zonal Hospital Mandi for medical treatment, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The family members of the deceased were informed about the incident soon after the tragedy.

The post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted at Zonal Hospital Mandi, following which the body was handed over to the family members for final rites on Monday.

According to Mandi SP Vinod Kumar, police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) at Padhar police station.
