As part of its effort to cut wasteful expenditure, Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has withdrawn special privileges granted to several top-ranking officials, both official and non-official, at its 56 hotels. The perks included rooms at Rs 100 per day and a 50% discount on food.

It is reliably learnt that henceforth, chairmen and vice-chairmen, mostly political appointees, and the managing director, usually a bureaucrat, will no longer be entitled to these heavy discounts as perks attached to their posts. Earlier, all three were entitled to a room at any HPTDC hotel for a nominal Rs 100 per day and a 50% discount on food while in office. They also got 50% discount on room tariff and food even after demitting office, a benefit that has now been withdrawn.

Similarly, members of the Board of Directors were entitled to 50% discount on accommodation for their son’s or daughter’s wedding, 40% discount on food, and 20% discount on transport facilities extended by HPTDC. These entitlements have also been withdrawn.

Directors, both official and non-official, on HPTDC Board used to get free room and food at HPTDC hotels to attend Board meetings. Apart from this, they were entitled to a lifelong 30% discount on room tariff. The state government has withdrawn these facilities too.

More than two dozen HPTDC hotels and restaurants are running in losses despite being located in picturesque and idyllic locations. A majority of hotels need major renovation and a facelift to turn profitable. However, given the state government’s grave financial health, funds are not available for this exercise. Faced with stiff competition from private players, HPTDC is no longer the first choice for tourists.
