The Congress on Monday claimed that party-backed candidates have won 31 of the 47 municipal councils and nagar panchayats that went to polls yesterday.

Congress organisation secretary Vinod Zinta said party-backed candidates swept the elections in Kangra and Chamba districts, winning all seats in both districts. He added that party-backed candidates also outperformed the BJP in Shimla and Sirmaur districts.

Zinta challenged the BJP to a debate on the election results, terming the party’s claim of victory as false.

“The BJP should stop making false claims. How can the party claim a winning candidate as its own when it had expelled that person before the elections?” he asked.

Zinta said the people have given their mandate to the Congress, and the party would win the four municipal corporations as well. The results of the four municipal corporations will be announced on May 31.
