Maharaja Agrasen Airport, Hisar, has received a major boost with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), approving the commissioning of an Instrument Landing System (ILS). The ILS will enable aircraft operations in visibility as low as 370 metres. Until now, landings at the airport required minimum visibility of around 1,200 metres under the recently approved IFR non-precision approach system.

Airport director OP Saini said approval for commissioning the ILS was received on June 11. However, it will become operational from August 6, as all stakeholders need to be informed and trained on the new system.

Saini said the facility is a significant addition to the airport’s upgrade for landing operations. The airport is currently operating flights from Hisar to four destinations: Delhi, Ayodhya, Jaipur, and Chandigarh. He added that two more destinations, Jammu and Ahmedabad, are likely to be connected from Hisar soon.

The director said about 551 flights have taken off from Hisar so far, with over 9,000 passengers travelling to and from different destinations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated flights from Hisar airport to Ayodhya and New Delhi on April 13, 2025. Later, in April this year, the airport added a non-precision runway visual range facility after receiving an instrument flight rules licence. The RVR system allows landings in 1,800 metres visibility and enables low-visibility and night operations.

Work on the new terminal building, spread over 37,790 sq m, is underway at full pace. Significant construction has been completed on the Rs 490 crore project. The terminal is scheduled for completion by April 2027. Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone of the terminal during his visit on April 14, 2025, and flagged off the first flight to Ayodhya.
