Former Umno leaders Hishammuddin Hussein and Khairy Jamaluddin are among 6,252 former members accepted back into the party under its Gagasan Rumah Bangsa initiative.

MELAKA: Former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin have been readmitted to the party.

They are part of a group of 6,252 former leaders and members accepted back unconditionally under the Gagasan Rumah Bangsa initiative.

The decision was made at the Umno Supreme Council meeting chaired by president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced the move at a media conference following the meeting.

He stated that all names were processed by the Rumah Bangsa Committee chaired by Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin. “In terms of the constitution, everything must go through the Supreme Council,” Asyraf Wajdi said.

Other prominent figures accepted back include former foreign minister Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar. The readmissions cover former members at division and branch levels across Malaysia.

In other party business, the Supreme Council amended membership rules to enable online registration. The new system for smoother registration, especially for youth, begins this Monday.

The move follows a survey by Umno Youth and Puteri Umno on social media. It found about 2,800 youths were interested in joining the party in the last two weeks.

On the cost of living, the council recommended states led by the party focus on additional aid. Johor, Melaka, Perak and Pahang are urged to help segments facing challenges due to the global energy crisis.

The crisis stems from the ongoing West Asian conflict. The party also outlined plans for its 80th-anniversary celebrations from May 1 to 5.

Programmes at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur will include the Umno 80 Year Convention and the Bumiputera Education Congress. An Entrepreneurial and Education Carnival and special gatherings for new members with Umno Youth and Puteri wings are also planned.

Tonight’s meeting approved physical and online branch-level conferences for wings in years without party elections. This is in line with Article 10.15 of the Umno Constitution.
