A 41-year-old unemployed man was arrested for allegedly molesting several women at the Lurah Semantan Ramadan bazaar, with the incident recorded on video and widely circulated on social media.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Hassan confirmed the arrest, stating that the case gained attention after a 21-second TikTok video went viral. The footage showed the suspect’s actions, leading to immediate public outrage and prompting a police investigation.
“So far, we have received complaints from three victims aged 23, 26, and 27, who work as a trader, cashier, and sales assistant, respectively. They reported that the suspect molested them while they were buying food for breaking their fast on March 6 and 10,” Mazlan said, as reported by Sinar Harian.
According to the victims, the suspect deliberately bumped into them, using the opportunity to make inappropriate physical contact.
“The suspect was not just accidentally brushing against them—his actions were deliberate and targeted,” Mazlan added.
Following the reports the police arrested the suspect after the public had already apprehended the person.
During questioning, the suspect revealed that he had not engaged in any intimate relations for a long time, citing his HIV-positive status, which he has been living with for 13 years. It is clear that his condition still does not justify his actions.
As the police are continuing their investigations, potential victims of molestation should also come forward if they have experienced similar incidents.
Public concern over safety at Ramadan bazaars will grow following the incident. This may be a call for stricter security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. Local authorities should assure the public that they will increase patrols in crowded areas to ensure the safety of visitors.
Such incidents should be brought to the police attention and the public awareness campaigns should be launched as to how to report such incidents.
