HMRC to write to thousands over pension top-up payment

  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is writing to thousands of low earners who could be eligible for a pension top-up payment averaging around £70.
  • The payments aim to compensate individuals earning between £10,000 and £12,570 who missed out on tax relief due to Net Pay Arrangement pension schemes.
  • Women are estimated to make up 75 per cent of all lower earners entitled to receive the top-up payment.
  • Eligible individuals do not need to apply or contact HMRC, as letters will be sent out over the coming months with details on how to claim via their online Personal Tax Account.
  • HMRC has warned taxpayers to be aware of scams, confirming it will never text, call or email about the payment, nor request passwords or money transfers.
