Hog, dairy, chicken output up in Q2

PRODUCTION of hogs, dairy, chicken, and chicken eggs increased in the second quarter (Q2), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported Thursday.

Hog production rose 5.6 percent to 412,280 metric tons (MT) liveweight from 390,490 MT in the same period last year.

Despite higher output, the country’s hog inventory as of June 30 declined 1 percent to 8.93 million heads from 9.01 million a year earlier.

Central Luzon was the largest hog-producing region, accounting for 58,450 MT, or 14.2 percent of total output. It was followed by Calabarzon with 58,350 MT; Northern Mindanao, 51,720 MT; Central Visayas, 30,140 MT; and Davao, 28,620 MT.

The average farmgate price of hogs for slaughter fell 18.6 percent to P172.44 per kilogram from P211.91 a year earlier.

Meanwhile, dairy production jumped 37.8 percent to 13,580 MT from 9,860 a year ago. The country’s dairy animal inventory as of June 30 also grew 6.6 percent to 165,860 heads from 155,660.

Calabarzon led dairy production with 2,538.43 MT, or 18.7 percent of the total. It was followed by Central Luzon with 2,176.81 MT; Western Visayas 2,025.71 MT; Northern Mindanao, 1,522.13 MT; and Ilocos, 793.37 MT.

The average farmgate price of dairy products increased 5.8 percent to P70.16 per liter from P66.32 in Q2 2025.

Chicken production grew 4.1 percent to 586,180 MT liveweight from 563,040 a year earlier. Chicken inventory climbed 7.4 percent to 228.49 million birds from 212.83 million.

Central Luzon remained the country’s biggest chicken producer with 193,720 MT, accounting for 33 percent of total output. Calabarzon followed with 123,640 MT; Northern Mindanao, 41,570 MT; Soccsksargen, 31,360 MT; and Central Visayas with 30,660 MT.

The average farmgate price of broiler chicken declined 8.1 percent to P116.38 per kg from P126.63 a year earlier.

Chicken egg production, meanwhile, expanded by 13.2 percent to 235,150 MT. The country’s laying flock grew 7.3 percent to 80.53 million birds as of end-June, accounting for 64.7 percent of the total.

Calabarzon was the leading chicken egg producer with 86,770 MT, or 36.9 percent of nationwide production. It was followed by Central Luzon with 34,350 MT; Central Visayas, 24,810 MT; Northern Mindanao, 18,880 MT; and Soccsksargen, 11,380 MT.

Despite the increase in production, the average farmgate price of chicken eggs fell 7.9 percent to P6.30 per piece from P6.84 a year earlier.
