From passports to packing, get properly sorted before trip
A holiday can take months to plan, yet the final hour before leaving home often becomes a scramble for passports, chargers and the house keys you were holding seconds ago.
Somewhere between booking the hotel and choosing outfits, the less exciting details get pushed aside.
A checklist gives those details a place to live. Start one several days before departure, then save a shorter version for the morning you leave. Here is what deserves a tick before you head to the airport.
Start with your documents
Put your passport or identification document at the top. Physically check that it is in your bag instead of trusting your memory.

For overseas trips, check your destination’s passport validity, visa and arrival form requirements early. Discovering a problem while your airport transfer waits outside leaves little room to fix it.
Keep flight details, accommodation bookings and travel insurance information together. Download copies for offline access and consider carrying printed backups of essential documents. Your travel companion should also know where the shared bookings are stored.
Read flight details properly
Check the departure date, time, airport and terminal against your booking. A flight just after midnight deserves particular attention: You may need to leave home the previous evening.
Plan backwards from your airline’s recommended arrival time, allowing for traffic, parking and getting to the terminal. Malaysia Airlines recommends arriving at least three hours before international flights and two hours before domestic departures. Check your own airline’s guidance and deadlines.
For anyone travelling from the Klang Valley, confirm whether your booking says KLIA Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or Subang before arranging transport.
Weigh bag before leaving
A suitcase that closes successfully has passed only one test. Weigh it at home and compare it with the allowance attached to your booking, including cabin baggage.

Review what belongs in each bag. Keep travel documents, valuables and essential medication accessible, and check restrictions covering liquids, sharp objects and batteries.
Power banks need particular attention. Malaysia Airlines requires them in cabin baggage and prohibits their use or charging during flights. Check your carrier’s current limits and storage instructions before packing yours.
Leave some luggage space for purchases too.
Prepare for the first few hours
Charge your phone and pack the correct cable and travel adapter. Download your boarding pass when available, along with your accommodation address and directions.
Decide how you will get online and pay for transport after arrival. Keep some accessible spending money and a backup payment option.
Pack a change of clothes in your cabin bag if space permits. It can save you an immediate shopping trip if your checked luggage is delayed.
Give home a final check
Your checklist should also cover what you leave behind. Clear perishable food, take out rubbish, switch off unnecessary appliances and arrange care for pets or plants.
Before locking up, check your passport, phone, wallet, medication and keys once more. Tick each item only after seeing it. Then leave with enough time to reach your gate without running.
