The National Registration Department (JPN) has been chosen as the main agency for MyDigital ID pre-registration to help boost the use of digital identity verification in Malaysia.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has asked JPN director-general Badrul Hisham Alias to work on the processes and legal steps needed to make it happen, as reported by BERNAMA.

M’sians turning 12 will be automatically registered

Saifuddin explained that JPN has the most reliable and complete citizen data, and with this approach, every Malaysian turning 12 will automatically get registered for a digital ID when they get their MyKad.

He also mentioned that changes to the National Registration Act would be made so that transactions using MyDigital ID would be legally recognised.

This decision was made during the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IRN) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The system will identify users for online transactions

For those of you who didn’t know, MyDigital ID is a government initiative for secure and verified online identity checks, which has been in the works since 2016.

Earlier, Anwar expressed disappointment over delays in rolling out 2 national digital projects, MyDigital ID and the second 5G network.

The digital identity system will be used by both the public and private sectors to verify user identities for online transactions.
