KUALA LUMPUR – The Home Ministry will table the proposal on amendments to the Federal Constitution regarding the citizenship of children born abroad by Malaysian women who are married to foreigners to the Cabinet on March 8.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told a press conference today that if accepted by the Cabinet, the proposal would be tabled to Parliament according to plan.

In December last year, Saifuddin Nasution was reported to have said that the Attorney-General's Chambers was drafting proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution regarding the matter.

He said the proposed amendments to Article 14(1)(b) of the constitution would be to include the word 'mother', to enable the child's citizenship to be obtained by force of law.

He said the proposed amendments were drafted after taking into account the input of all parties through several engagement sessions. – February 21, 2024
