  • Rushanara Ali, the homelessness minister, resigned from her government role following accusations of significantly increasing the rent on her East London townhouse.
  • Ms Ali was accused of raising the monthly rent by £700 on her four-bedroom property after the previous tenants' contract ended.
  • In her resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Ms Ali stated that remaining in the role would be a "distraction from the ambitious work of this government".
  • Shadow housing secretary Kevin Hollinrake had called for her resignation, labelling her actions as "staggering hypocrisy" given her ministerial position.
  • Her departure marks another blow to the Prime Minister, following other recent resignations from the government.
