Veteran actor Patrick Tse, known as ‘Fourth Brother’, passes away peacefully at home aged 89.
HONG KONG veteran actor Patrick Tse Yin, affectionately known as “Fourth Brother” (Sei Gor), has died at the age of 89.
His family announced the news in a statement on Monday (July 20), revealing that the beloved actor passed away peacefully at home after his health had declined in recent years, according to Hong Kong’s English-language newspaper The Standard.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father, Patrick Tse,” the family said.
They added that Tse was surrounded by his loved ones during his final moments.
The family also paid tribute to his decades-long career, describing him as an actor and artist who achieved remarkable success throughout his life.
According to the statement, Tse was not only respected for his work in the entertainment industry but also admired for his charisma, passion for life and distinctive personality. They said his style and spirit would continue to live on in the hearts of the public.
Following the announcement, singer-actor Nicholas Tse Ting-fung reportedly returned to Hong Kong from mainland China, where he had been preparing for his upcoming Evolution Nic Live concerts in Qingdao on July 25 and 26.
Nicholas later issued a heartfelt statement mourning his father’s passing.
He described Patrick Tse as an actor who dedicated his entire life to film and entertainment, bringing joy and laughter to generations of audiences.
Nicholas also shared one of his father’s guiding beliefs, saying Patrick Tse always believed that “the show must go on”.
He added that his father would want people to remember him not with sorrow, but for his charisma, humour and passion for life.
According to Nicholas, preserving his father’s ever-charming and joyful image in their hearts would be the greatest tribute.
Reports said the Tse family would keep funeral arrangements private in accordance with Patrick Tse’s wishes.
His daughter, Jennifer Tse Ting-ting, who lives in Canada with her husband and children, is also expected to return to Hong Kong to bid farewell to her father.
Patrick Tse’s last reported public appearance was in late April, when he was spotted having coffee with friends at a café on The Peak.
He was seen using a wheelchair and carrying a walking stick, appearing noticeably thinner than before. Despite his frail condition, he remained instantly recognisable in his signature style, wearing a dark red tracksuit, blue trousers, a cap, sunglasses and his trademark ponytail.
Witnesses said Tse remained warm and approachable throughout the outing. He happily posed for photographs with members of the public and smiled throughout the encounter, displaying the same charm that made him one of Hong Kong’s most beloved entertainers.
In recent years, Tse had largely stepped away from the spotlight following his Best Actor win at the 2022 Hong Kong Film Awards for Time. He did not take on any new acting projects after receiving the prestigious honour.
Patrick Tse leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning decades in Hong Kong cinema and television. Generations of fans will remember him not only for his memorable performances but also for the unmistakable charisma that earned him the nickname “Fourth Brother”.
