Horror film poster banned after concerns over distressing image

  • The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has prohibited posters for the film The Mummy from being displayed in locations where children might see them.
  • The decision followed 30 complaints, with many finding the advertisements distressing for both children and adults.
  • The ASA ruled that the posters, featuring a mummified female figure, gave a realistic impression of a dead child, making them unsuitable for public display where children could see them.
  • Warner Bros defended the posters, stating they were prepared responsibly, not intended to cause distress and depicted a “living mummy” with a neutral expression.
  • Separately, complaints against TV and poster advertisements for another Warner Bros film, They Will Kill You, were not upheld by the ASA, which found the imagery stylised and scheduling restrictions sufficient.
