San Raffaele hospital has released a statement on Monza president Silvio Berlusconi after a pneumonia and leukaemia diagnosis.

The 86-year-old Italian businessman was taken into hospital yesterday with breathing difficulties and cardiovascular problems, which were diagnosed to be pneumonia as a result of his leukaemia.

A hospital statement read: President Silvio Berlusconi is currently in intensive care for the treatment of a pulmonary infection.

The infectious event is part of a chronic haematological condition of which he has been a carrier for some time: chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, the persistent chronic phase of which has been ascertained and the absence of evolutionary features in acute leukaemia.

The current therapeutic strategy involves treating the pulmonary infection, specialised cytoreductive treatment aimed at limiting the negative effects of the pathological hyperleukocytosis and restoring the pre-existing clinical conditions."
