Police in Hungary said on Tuesday that they are investigating a hospital porter on suspicion of collecting and storing body parts in his flat for his own consumption.

The alleged case of cannibalism by the 30-year-old man is said to have occurred in the capital, Budapest.

Officers who searched his home seized human bones, an entire lower leg, the back of a hand, several skulls and a preserved human face.

During questioning, the man stated that he was attracted to human body parts and had already cooked and consumed some.

He reportedly obtained the parts at his workplace and exhumed others from cemeteries in Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia.

The suspect spoke openly with family and friends about his morbid fascination and even took photos of his "collection," which the police also seized.

The man, whose job entails transporting patients around the hospital, was initially arrested on June 17 and is currently under judicial supervision.

The public prosecutor's office is investigating him on suspicion of disturbing the peace of the dead.
