In happier times. Anwar Mahathir Daim. Malaysia Today

In a week brimming with political intrigue, two of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's most prominent nemeses—Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Daim Zainuddin—found themselves in hospital beds, causing their pending court cases to be postponed.

If this feels eerily familiar, it’s because we’ve seen such moments play out before. But this time, the irony is especially rich, given the uncanny echoes of Anwar’s own legal travails when he wasn’t yet in office.

Tun Dr. Mahathir, now nearing 100, was recently admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for a respiratory infection, causing his defamation suit against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to be delayed.

Meanwhile, Daim Zainuddin, a former finance minister and long-time Mahathir ally, was hospitalized under mysterious circumstances, postponing a court decision about his mental health assessment.

For Mahathir's detractors, this is all too convenient. Critics were quick to point out the suspicious timing, with some poking fun at his tendency to end up at IJN whenever a court case is around the corner.

Social media was abuzz with snarky comments about Mahathir’s health being his “safehouse,” a place to avoid courtroom drama while perhaps plotting the next big move. One particularly cheeky netizen wondered aloud if it’s only when faced with legal proceedings that Mahathir mysteriously becomes too ill, yet still somehow manages to drive at breakneck speeds in his prime moments of health.

Then there’s Daim. Hospitalized at Assunta Hospital with no clear reason or discharge date, Daim’s absence from court has already triggered rumours. Could his sudden ailment be more than just coincidental? Given the charges he faces—failing to declare millions in assets—it’s no surprise that many are skeptical. For someone who hasn’t appeared in court since being charged in January, the timing couldn’t be more advantageous.

It’s hard not to see parallels between their current circumstances and Anwar Ibrahim’s own experience with court delays when he was a political outcast rather than the current Prime Minister.

I remember Anwar himself was often hospitalized during his legal battles.

Now, with the roles reversed, it seems Anwar’s political adversaries are facing the same sort of trolling and skepticism he once endured.

The irony of the situation is glaring: today’s accused manipulators of medical leave are the very same men who once wielded immense power, including the ability to orchestrate political and legal strategies that affected Anwar’s fate.

What goes around comes around, as they say, and in Malaysian politics, the court of public opinion can be just as brutal as the actual courts of law.

But beneath the sarcasm and social media jabs lies a more serious question: is this a coincidence, or is it a tactical move by men who have long mastered the art of political maneuvering?

After all, both Mahathir and Daim have spent decades navigating the complex interplay of power, law, and health. Their hospitalisation come at a time when both men are facing significant legal hurdles, and the delays are convenient to say the least.

In the end, whether you believe these are legitimate hospitalisations or strategic retreats, one thing is clear—Anwar Ibrahim is now in a position to watch as his former adversaries face the same suspicions he once did.

And for his supporters, it must feel like poetic justice, watching the tables turn on two of Malaysia’s most iconic political figures.

In Malaysia, the courtroom drama continues, but with hospital beds as the newest stage for delaying the inevitable.
