THE House of Representatives has adopted House Resolution 991 to recognize the Philippines’ election as chair of the International Maritime Organization Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping.
House Assistant Majority Leader Nathaniel Oducado authored the measure to commend the Maritime Industry Authority and Philippine Maritime Attaché Sharon De Chavez-Aledo. De Chavez-Aledo secured the leadership post after receiving 53 votes during the election in London.
The subcommittee establishes global regulations for seafarer training, certification, and watchkeeping protocols. These standards directly govern maritime safety and the operational welfare of the international merchant fleet.
Legislators described the election as a definitive achievement for the Philippine maritime sector. The result confirms international confidence in the country’s regulatory administration and technical expertise.
The Philippines remains a primary provider of the global seafaring workforce. Filipino maritime professionals continue to support international trade through the operation of commercial vessels across global shipping routes.
The chairmanship provides the Philippines a strategic role in shaping future maritime policy. The country will now lead the development of international standards for maritime education and shipboard safety.
