House okays motion to endorse articles of impeachment to Senate

MANILA, Philippines—The House of Representatives on Monday approved the motion to endorse the impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate.

This came after 257 lawmakers voted to send the impeachment articles to the Senate for trial. Twenty-five voted against and nine others abstained.

Under the 1987 Constitution, only the House can initiate Impeachment cases and only the Senate can conduct an impeachment trial.

Senior Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo 3rd District Rep. Lorenz Defensor made the motion.

"I move to endorse to the Senate the resolution setting forth the Articles of Impeachment together with all the annexes pursuant to the rules of the House on impeachment proceedings,” Defensor said.

"I further move that the [House] Secretary General be directed to prepare and transmit the same to the Senate for appropriate action in accordance with the Constitution and" the House's rules," he said.

His motion was approved.
