MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a bill that will provide mandatory insurance coverage for line workers.

House Bill 7239 hurdled third and final reading with 197 lawmakers voting for its passage.

House Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, an author of the bill, said line workers "keep the economy going."

Under the bill, all line workers "shall be entitled to life and accident or disability insurance benefits.”

The minimum coverage will be P200,000 for small electric cooperatives, P400,000 for medium ones, P600,000 for large ones, P800,000 for extra-large ones, and P1 million for mega large ones. For National Transmission Corporation line workers "and the transmission line or grid operator," the minimum insurance coverage is P2 million. For private distribution utilities, the minimum insurance coverage is P1.5 million.
