House panel eyes ending impeach hearing on April 29

THE House Committee on Justice plans to end on April 29 its hearing on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.

The committee is conducting the hearing to determine whether there is probable cause to impeach her.

"To my knowledge, on the 29th, hopefully we will wrap up," Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, a member of the committee, said in Filipino and English in a radio interview on Sunday.

A vote of at least one-third of all the members of the House is needed to affirm or override the articles of impeachment.

The committee will focus on Duterte’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) at its next hearing on April 22 as it deliberates the charge of unexplained wealth against her.

"We intend to focus for the next hearing on the allegations of unexplained wealth and that is why the Ombudsman, the SEC, and the BIR were not asked in today's hearing," Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville Luistro, the committee chairman, said in a press conference on Tuesday night.

The Office of the Ombudsman submitted Duterte’s SALNs to the committee that subpoenaed them. The statements cover the periods 2022 to 2025, 2007 to 2013, and 2016 to 2022, when she was mayor of Davao City.

Last Tuesday, the committee decided to summon former senator Antonio Trillanes IV to its April 22 hearing.

Mamamayang Liberal Rep. Leila de Lima, who moved for the issuance of subpoena ad testificandum and duces tecum to Trillanes, said he "was cited in the Saballa et al. complaint in relation to the specific allegation on VP Duterte's assets." The committee also issued a subpoena to the Anti-Money Laundering Council.

The complaint filed by Father Joel Saballa along with other people is one of the two impeachment cases filed against Duterte that the committee is hearing.

Duterte has called on the committee to dismiss the complaints.

Four impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte last February.
