A Kuala Terengganu housewife lost RM38,505 to a fake TikTok job scam after being lured with small commissions before fake “withdrawal fees.”
KUALA TERENGGANU: A housewife lost RM38,505 after being tricked by a non-existent online part-time job syndicate.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said on August 15, the 36-year-old victim was contacted via phone call by a suspect posing as a TikTok representative.
He said the suspect asked the victim to verify her address for the purpose of posting items for review on a WhatsApp group.
“The victim received the items and received a commission of RM3 after reviewing them as instructed. The suspect then offered the victim a new assignment with a lucrative commission rate.
“The victim, who wanted to earn extra income, completed several tasks, namely reviewing items on social media. However, the suspect asked the victim to make a certain amount of payment supposedly as management costs for the withdrawal of profits,” he said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim then made five payments totalling RM38,505 from August 15 to 18 using her savings, but still failed to get the commission as promised.
Following that, the victim lodged a police report at 4.39 pm yesterday and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
