Once a national icon, Malaysia's Proton car company nearly disappeared before a foreign partner brought it roaring back to life.
Proton's story is a dramatic one: from being a symbol of Malaysian pride to almost shutting down. Started in 1983 by Tun Dr. Mahathir, Proton, with its famous Saga car, quickly became super popular and held a huge 74% of the car market in Malaysia. However, this early success, protected by the government, meant Proton didn't learn how to truly compete.
The problems became clear when the 1997 financial crisis hit and trade rules opened up, making it tough for Proton. Then, another Malaysian car company, Perodua, entered the scene. Teaming up with Daihatsu, Perodua focused on smaller, more affordable cars like the Kancil and Myvi, which quickly became favorites among Malaysians, eventually outselling Proton
Just when it seemed like Proton might fade away, a major Chinese car company, Geely, stepped in. In 2017, Geely bought a big part of Proton, bringing in new money, smart ideas, and even technology from Volvo. Geely quickly made big changes, cutting costs, making things more efficient, and launching exciting new cars like the X70 and X50. Now, Proton is building a large new manufacturing hub and focusing on electric vehicles, looking set to become a major player again, both in Malaysia and globally.
