- The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, which has claimed over 1,000 lives and resulted in more than 2,400 confirmed cases, marking it as the third-worst outbreak ever recorded.
- Widespread misinformation, including false accusations that nurses are killing patients, is causing a significant decline in patient attendance at health centres and has led to at least a dozen violent attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel.
- The humanitarian response is severely hindered by ongoing violence in eastern Congo, population displacement, global aid reductions, and protests from medical staff over unpaid wages, with 36 health workers tragically succumbing to the virus.
- The outbreak, driven by the highly contagious Bundibugyo strain, has expanded beyond its initial epicentre in Ituri province to encompass other regions, with approximately 80 per cent of new infections originating from unknown transmission chains.
- In response to the crisis, Oxford University has initiated human trials for a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain, two treatment drugs are undergoing trials in Ituri, and the World Health Organisation is scaling up rapid response teams and enhancing surveillance efforts.
