How life-changing war injuries have transformed people in Gaza

Since October 2023, Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has killed more than 74,000 people, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The retaliatory strikes followed Hamas’ bloody October 7 attack, which killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.

For people in Palestine, the October 7 anniversary brings another day living with the results of Israel’s retaliatory strikes.

Many people in Gaza are adjusting to their life-changing injuries. Homes, hospitals, universities, and places of worship are now damaged or reduced to rubble.

Najwa Abu Eita, 42, showed the Associated Press a photo of herself before she was injured in a bombing in 2024. Her daughter was killed in the strike.

She says she is unable to work or afford medical treatment, and her children avoid her because “they are afraid of me and my appearance.”
