  • With rising petrol and diesel prices, many drivers are considering electric vehicles, with public charging now available through 118,321 devices across 45,561 locations as of February.
  • Charger speeds vary widely, from rapid units over 350kW capable of charging a compatible car from 10 to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes, to slower 3-8kW chargers suitable for overnight use.
  • Drivers can locate charging points using services like Zapmap, Google Maps, or their vehicle's in-built navigation system, which can also plan routes and estimate charging times.
  • Charging costs, typically around 80p/kWh for high-powered units, can be reduced by using operator apps, subscribing to services like Ionity's Power 365 plan, or opting for slower chargers when time allows.
  • While new chargers are legally required to have contactless payment, using provider apps often unlocks cheaper rates, making it advisable to check these for the best prices.
