When many of my friends passed on the past two years, I began thinking more about how I am living my own life.

Life in this world is neither simple nor neat. It often confounds us and eludes our control. There are good and happy days. There are days when everything seems to go wrong. We simply cannot understand and we often ask, ‘Why’. Whether we like it or not, we will all one day end in the grave. As such, we need to get our focus right so that we can live with minimum regret.

After living for more than six decades, I have come to realize that bad days are normal. So, we need to always prepare for rainy days. Humans are complex beings who are tainted with selfishness, greed and jealousy. Thus, we see all kinds of evil in society – gossip, backstabbing or even manipulation of systems for self-gain or promotion. So, choose your friends wisely and never allow bad experiences to shackle you from living life. Be courageous and move on. Let bad experiences be lessons to gain wisdom.

The sun rises and sets. The rain comes for all, both the righteous and the unrighteous. Some are poor and some are wealthy. However, wealth may not always be equal to happiness. The wealthy man may be plagued by problems which are often not shared. Conversely, those who do not have much material wealth may actually be getting more out of life, reaping peace and joy in their daily lives. So, learn to be contented and thankful. Count your blessings and bless others in any way you can. A merry heart is good for our souls.

Each of us is also unique in our character and capabilities. We are given a measure of time to be on this earth. As we go through the cycle of life, we have various kinds of experiences. How we fare in life actually depends on how we handle our experiences. Never be trapped in guilt trips because of the expectations of others. Be real and honest with yourself. Do what you can and are passionate about. Use and develop your talents so that you are a blessing to your peers and community. Rewards may not necessarily come in the form of Ringgit and Sen but in the joy of a feeling of fulfilment or the smiles on their faces.

So, how would you choose to live? May you be blessed with the truth and courage to make the right choices in life.
