Newcastle United players received a simple message from their manager Eddie Howe this week.

The Magpies are expected to have a scintillating campaign, as they have made significant summer signings.

But as they get ready to participate in the Champions League for the first time in two decades, Howe wants his players to keep their feet on the ground.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "The key thing is not to think about that (five spaces available for the Champions League in 2024/2025).

The key thing last season was can we beat, say, Nottingham Forest (on the opening day last season)?

"If we beat them it is a great place to build a season. Now it is: can we beat Aston Villa? It is not a given. The start we have this season is very very difficult. That is the challenge we have to overcome."
