Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admits he wants to drive down the average age of his squad.

Howe is concerned about the average age of his Newcastle squad and admits that younger players are on the agenda moving forward. United signed Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Chris Wood last January, all in their 30s, and brought in 30-year-old Nick Pope in the summer. Jonjo Shelvey, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar are also over 30.

Howe said: "The thing for us is we are trying to provide long-term growth. We have a longer-term vision. For us, we have an ageing squad. We need to invest in more young players. It's a big part and we need to get the average down.

"It might not be the type of signing (Ronaldo) we'd look to make but I'm not underestimating the quality the player has."
