The Himachal Pradesh High Court has expressed serious concern over the non-functionality of lifts in multi-storey government hospitals across the state.

Taking note of the issue, a Division Bench comprising Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Bipin Chander Negi directed the state authorities to file a fresh status report and make earnest efforts to restore all 13 non-functional lifts before the next hearing.

The court passed the order after examining an affidavit filed by the state government, which revealed that only 43 of the 56 lifts installed in 118 multi-storey hospitals are currently functional.

According to the affidavit, 13 lifts remain out of order due to various reasons, including issues related to Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) and ongoing maintenance work.

The Bench observed that functional lifts are essential for the convenience and safety of patients, doctors, senior citizens and differently-abled persons visiting hospitals.
