KUALA LUMPUR — The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) is looking to develop an extended 24-hour protection framework that would benefit 7.6 million low-income workers,
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis - BN), said this new protection scheme would provide 24-hour coverage to workers that would extend outside working hours.
"In principle, this framework is capable of reducing inequality gaps and at the same time, it will ensure that workers are not left out from necessary social protections," Abdul Rahman told parliament today.
The ministry will hold consultations with the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) as well as the Sabah and Sarawak state governments on the proposal, he added.
Additionally, Abdul Rahman also pointed out that Perkeso currently also provides an Employee Injury and Invalidity Scheme, which includes benefits for medical treatment, disabilities, beneficiaries, funeral expenses, and disability pensions among others.
Abdul Rahman was responding to a question by Sivakumar Naidu (PH - Batu Gajah) who asked the Human Resources Ministry if the government will introduce a comprehensive social insurance scheme to protect low-income workers who cannot afford health insurance from the private sector. - October 24, 2024
