The Chinese New Year frenzy is an annual experience, but comedian Douglas Lim has elevated it into comedic entertainment with his hilarious music video, “Oh Mak I Dah CNY.”
This side-splitting parody perfectly captures the chaos and quirks of preparing for Chinese New Year right after the December festivities.
Drawing inspiration from De Fam’s hit Alamak Raya Lagi, Lim teams up with singer Chelsia Ng to belt out a festive song that pokes fun at the realities of the season.
From scrambling to buy mandarin oranges and reunion dinner ingredients to polishing the family’s fanciest car for maximum flex, the song doesn’t miss a beat. And of course, what’s a family reunion without the classic teasing of unmarried relatives? It’s all fun and games until someone asks, “When’s your turn?”
Lim doesn’t shy away from the truths we all live but rarely admit. The song hilariously highlights the silent competition of preparing ang pows (red packets), the ridiculous stress of hosting relatives, and the love-hate relationship with long drives to hometowns like Penang and Johor Bahru. And let’s not forget the golden rule: everything can be chaotic, but never forget to mop the floors!
As if juggling New Year prep wasn’t enough, Lim throws in a curveball by reminding us of the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations. “Badan pun naik ke tepi” (gaining weight sideways) is the universal post-festive mood, but Lim’s advice? No worries as dieting is a problem for future you.
The video, spiced up with cameos from Feng Shui master Joey Yap, AuntyHR Ku Sim Ling, and dance crew Elecoldxhot, has received rave reviews. Fans are calling it “the song of the year,” with many suggesting it be played in shopping malls and added to karaoke playlists.
With its catchy tune and laugh-out-loud lyrics, “Oh Mak I Dah CNY” doesn’t just capture the festive vibe but also serves as a hilarious reminder to take the chaos in stride and enjoy the fun-filled celebrations.
