Huge saltwater crocodile safely relocated from Country Heights

A SALTWATER crocodile (crocodylus porosus) weighing over 300 kgs that had been kept for the past 46 years at a residence in Taman Country Heights, here, was relocated safely.

The relocation operation was carried out by a team from the Selangor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) in collaboration with the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) recently.

Selangor Perhilitan Director, Wan Mohd Adib Wan Mohd Yusoh said the relocation process began at 9.30 am after the owner voluntarily surrendered it based on concerns for animal welfare and supporting long-term conservation efforts.

According to him, the relocation of the crocodile was carried out directly from the pond in the owner's house.

"The crocodile is estimated to be about four metres long and weighs over 300 kg.

"Based on information from the owner, the female crocodile has been cared for over 46 years," he said in a statement.

He said the transfer process took about an hour to capture, tie and lift the crocodile onto the department's vehicle before taking it to Paya Indah Wetlands for observation and adaptation of habitat.

"The main challenge in transferring the crocodile was the size and weight of the reptile involved, as well as ensuring the safety of all personnel,” he said.

He said the reptile's owner had a valid special permit from the Wildlife Department and the voluntary surrender was made as placing the crocodile in a conservation centre was more suitable for the reptile's care and survival. – April 22, 2025
