Chris Hughes has returned to Chelsea as new head of academy medical.

Hughes has also been named first team doctor. He had worked at Chelsea for five years from 2012 before leaving for Tottenham.

He is now reunited with former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

An audit saw 50 per cent of staff leave the medical department last season - and saw Chelsea suffer almost historic levels of injuries.

Former Blues managers Graham Potter and Frank Lampard publicly complained that injuries and lack of fitness in the squad were a factor behind the underperformance last season.
