The bomb threat that forced the evacuation of Centrepoint South Tower at Mid Valley City on Wednesday night has been confirmed to be a hoax.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said police received a call at 8.17pm from the building’s security manager, who reported receiving an email claiming that a pipe bomb had been planted inside the building.
Building evacuated as precaution
Following the report, the building was immediately evacuated to ensure the safety of everyone inside.
Police later deployed the Bomb Disposal Unit and K9 Unit, which carried out a thorough search of the premises at around 10.30pm.
After inspecting the entire area, officers found no explosives, suspicious objects or bomb-related devices.
False threat meant to cause panic
According to Hoo, preliminary investigations found that the email was a fake bomb threat intended to create fear and disrupt public safety.
The case is now being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for transmitting false or menacing online content, as well as Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation through anonymous communication.
Police presence sparked online speculation
Earlier that evening, photos of police vehicles and bomb disposal units outside the Mid Valley City complex began circulating on social media, prompting speculation about what had happened.
