FRESH political tensions have erupted between two political parties after DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong accused MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong of attempting to distance himself from his role in backing a potential Perikatan Nasional federal government following the 2022 general election.
The dispute centres on a statutory declaration signed during the post-election impasse after no coalition secured enough parliamentary seats to form a government independently.
Liew rejected Wee’s recent claim that he had never signed a declaration supporting PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang as prime minister, insisting instead that the declaration was aimed at enabling a Perikatan Nasional administration under former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“The SD that Wee signed was to support Muhyiddin Yassin, who was then chairman of Perikatan Nasional, in establishing a federal government with Bersatu and PAS,” Liew said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
The controversy has revived scrutiny over the chaotic aftermath of the 2022 Malaysian General Election, when Malaysia faced a hung parliament for the first time in its modern political history.
Pakatan Harapan emerged as the largest bloc with 82 parliamentary seats nationwide, while Perikatan Nasional secured 74 seats and Barisan Nasional suffered one of its worst electoral performances, winning only 30 seats.
Liew, who also serves as Deputy Finance Minister, argued that MCA’s decision at the time reflected the coalition’s refusal to support a government involving Anwar Ibrahim and DAP, despite the inconclusive election outcome.
According to him, Wee’s support for the statutory declaration was shaped by the belief that the political situation had become unstable and by adherence to the long-standing “No Anwar, No DAP” political stance within sections of Barisan Nasional.
The DAP leader also warned that Malaysia could face another fractured election result if the next general election develops into a three-cornered battle involving Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.
“If history repeats, Wee Ka Siong would probably once again support Perikatan Nasional to form the government,” he said.
Liew further alleged that Wee remained among the strongest supporters within Barisan Nasional for maintaining multi-cornered contests, arguing that such an electoral arrangement would allow MCA to contest more parliamentary seats beyond its current limited representation.
“Since this MCA president has chosen to bring up this issue, and given that he is one of the strongest proponents of a three-cornered fight, he has to make clear to the voters whether he will support the now PAS-dominated Perikatan Nasional in forming the government should the political situation of 2022 recur.
“At least by being honest, voters can know what MCA stands for,” Liew added. - May 26, 2026
