At least four people have died after Hurricane Milton devastated portions of Florida, leaving residents waking up to survey the damage.

Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday night near Sarasota County’s Siesta Key, bringing multiple tornadoes, 28ft waves, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and devastating storm surge.

Four people in St Lucie County retirement village have been killed by tornadoes brought on by the hurricane after a dozen twisters spawned in the region within 20 minutes.

Ferocious winds caused a crane to collapse into the The Tampa Bay Times in St Petersburg, while the roof of Tropicana Field baseball stadium has been left in disrepair.

More than 3.3m homes and businesses in Florida have been left powerless, with those in the west-central region the worst impacted.

Evacuation alerts were blasted out to millions, with Bradenton Police Chief Melanie issuing a bleak prognosis for those who neglected advice. “What we’ll probably be finding in the morning are bodies,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Thursday morning.

After landfall, Milton has weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and is moving off Florida’s east coast – with residents still battling against brutal winds and storm surge.

Schools closed across 53 of Florida’s 67 counties due to Hurricane Milton

14:23

James Liddell

K-12 schools across 53 of Florida’s 67 counties are set to close on Thursday, after Hurricane Milton ploughed through the state after making landfall on the west coast on Wednesday evening.

Schools across 21 of those closed counties are expected to reopen on Friday, according to the Florida Department of Education.

“The Florida Department of Education works closely with school districts before, during and after natural disasters to ensure they have the resources necessary to resume normal operations as quickly as possible. We will continue collaborating with district leadership to address questions as they arise,” a statement reads on the FLDOE website.

DeSantis ‘hasn’t confirmed’ tornado deaths, but says they’re ‘likely’

13:59

James Liddell

Ron DeSantis said he “has not confirmed” the death of four people said to have been killed by a tornado in St Lucie County on Wednesday ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall.

The Florida Governor to specify that “that does not mean there has not been any”.

He continued: “There's a process where this happens with the state. I know with the tornadoes, it seems very likely that there were, that there were some.

“With the tornadoes, that's the only reports we've received. No confirmations. I imagine there's going to be some confirmations, but it's too soon to tell.”

The morning briefing has now finished.

$50m available in loans for small businesses, DeSantis announces

13:55

James Liddell

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has activated a Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan program, with $50m available to hand out as loans for small businesses.

“We have 50 million available to Florida small businesses, and it's zero interest loan, very flexible repayment options,” he said in a Thursday morning briefing.

“You can apply for loans of up to $50,000 through the program. Loans of up to $100,000 are available for agriculture and aquaculture small businesses and loans of $150,000 are available for citrus and cattle operations.”

Storm waters may carry ‘fatal’ infections, DeSantis says

13:49

James Liddell

“Standing storm waters can also carry a bacteria that can lead to fatal infections,” Ron DeSantis said.

“This type of infection was responsible for a fatality following Hurricane Helene, so please avoid wading through standing water.”

The governor’s warning comes after the Florida Department of Health previously warned residents to avoid heavily-flooded areas due to the risk of Vibrio infections.

Exposure to the bacteria (often through open wounds or ingestion), which lives in coastal waters, can cause the illness vibriosis. The vibrio infection can cause watery diarrhea, vomiting, blistering skin lesions and discharge – if wounds become infected.

“The Florida Department of Health (Department) urges residents and visitors to avoid floodwaters and prevent exposure to Vibrio in anticipation of flooding and heavy rain caused by Hurricane Milton,” the Florida Department of Health said in a statement on Tuesday.

About 1 in 5 people with this infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill, the Center for Disease and Control Prevention says on its website.

DeSantis: ‘Don’t touch downed power lines during clean-up efforts!’

13:45

James Liddell

“Now, as you survey damage and clean up, please be cautious of hazards,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said during a Thursday morning press briefing call.

“We have post-storm fatalities almost every storm, and a lot of these fatalities are avoidable, so please be cautious of downed power lines.”

He continued: “Don't touch them. Don't remove tree debris that may be entangled with downed power lines. Standing water can conceal down power lines and other hazards. So please be mindful and never walk through storm waters.”

Families and pets rescued as National Guard deploys across 26 counties

13:41

James Liddell

DeSantis announced that dozens of search and rescue missions have been completed, with more than 48 residents being saved across Florida.

“State search and rescue teams report at least 48 individuals have been rescued as of 6.30am. National Guard search and rescue teams have worked overnight and successfully executed rescues of families and pets on the west coast and from the destruction of the tornadoes in east, in the central, and eastern parts of Florida.”

“The [Florida National Guard] continues to work into the morning and have 31 rescue aircraft operational, and hundreds of rescuers engaged in over 125 active missions In 26 different counties,” DeSantis said.

Tampa mayor relieved storm surge less than predicted – but issues stark warning

12:41

James Liddell

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor expressed relief that less storm surge was recorded than anticipated, but issued an urgent warning to Hillsborough county residents.

The city situated on Florida’s west coast suffered extensive damage as Hurricane Milton passed through the state, Castor said early on Thursday in a news conference.

Much of the panic was lessened as storm surge levels being less than up to 15ft anticipated in the city, which “saved a lot, that’s what we were really worried about,” the mayor added.

Castor warned that battle against Milton isn’t quite over. Particularly for the wider county.

“At 7am (ET) when high tide comes in, rivers are going to flood all over Hillsborough County, not just in the city of Tampa,” she said.

Fires have broken out due to downed power lines following Hurricane Milton’s hurricane-force winds battering the state.

The Matlacha and Pine Island Fire Control District responded to multiple calls about structure fires that had broken out on the Gulf Coast island located in Lee County.

Photos posted on its Facebook account show the building ablaze, and then the smoldering ruins after it was put out.

“Crews made access to the island a few hours ago and are responding to several calls including structure fires. Please stay off the road. We have multiple lines and poles down!,” the fire department wrote on Thursday morning.

Storm surge too brutal for deployment of emergency workers in Sarasota

11:56

James Liddell

Storm surge is still too brutal for deployment of emergency workers across Sarasota County – after Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key less than 12 hours ago.

Jamie Carson, the county’s spokesperson, says that first responders could not intervene despite police receiving 1,400 calls since Milton slammed into the county.

When conditions become milder, emergency workers will be deployed to help those in need.

“So as soon as those winds die down, as soon as our tactical first in teams go out there and they clear those arteries, those major roadways, our first responders are going to go out there and start responding to those calls,” Carson told NPR.

Biden calls Hurricane Milton 'storm of the century' in warning to Florida

05:18

Stuti Mishra

Ahead of Hurricane Milton's landfall, Joe Biden urged Floridians to heed local officials and brace for “the storm of the century”.

“To the people of Florida and all affected states, we’ve got your back,” Mr Biden said. “We’ve got your back, and Kamala and I will be there for as long as it takes to rescue, recover and rebuild.”

He also used his address late on Wednesday to criticise Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his "onslaught of lies" relating to Milton and the earlier Hurricane Helene.

“The last few weeks, there’s been a reckless, irresponsible, relentless promotion of disinformation and outright lies that are disturbing people,” Mr Biden said from the White House, “It’s ridiculous, and it’s got to stop.”
