Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old man was sentenced to a total of 10 years’ jail and ordered to get a stroke of the cane on two counts of causing hurt to a policeman and having a knife in public without a permit.

Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus meted out the sentence to Maslan Lamang, after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against Maslan on Thursday.

Maslan was convicted of the two charges after he opted to remain silent during his defence.

On the first count, Maslan was jailed four years for causing injury to Corporal Mohd Firdaus Nor Ahmad, 33, by using a pair of modified scissors at 1.25pm on Aug 24, 2020 under the stairs of Block G in Taman Puri Warisan, Inanam, here.

The offence, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years, with fine or with whipping, on conviction.

On the second count, he was jailed another six years plus a stroke of the cane for having a knife in public at the same place and time.

The offence under Section 6(1)(a) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapon Act 1958 carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, and whipping, on conviction.

However, the court ordered Maslan to serve the jail sentence concurrently from the date of his arrest on Aug 24, 2020.

The prosecution had called five witnesses during the hearing.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tham Pou Jin conducted the prosecution while Maslan was not represented.
