Police have arrested William Lowe for the murder of his 80-year-old wife, Aydil Barbosa Fontes, whose remains were discovered in five bags in South Florida.
Fontes was found on July 21 after human remains were found in a suitcase in the Intracoastal waterway, with Lowe allegedly shooting her in the head. Two additional suitcases with human remains were found on the same day, followed by the discovery of two more bags the next day. Detectives identified Lowe as a suspect after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle and person in the area multiple times before the suitcases were found.
Surveillance footage confirmed that Lowe's vehicle was in the area, and an airline scan code found in one of the suitcases matched Barbosa's address. During the investigation, detectives also found a storage unit containing a chainsaw that they believed Lowe used. Inside Fontes' home, blood splatter was discovered. Lowe has been charged with first-degree murder and improper dismemberment of a human body. Witnesses provided further details about the discovery of the suitcases.
One witness found a suitcase containing human legs, while another found a suitcase with a human torso and small rocks. A third witness discovered a suitcase containing a human female pelvis. Later that day, the coast guard found a bag containing a female human head with a gunshot wound, as well as a bag resembling a purse. Witnesses also provided information about Lowe's suspicious behaviour in the days leading up to his arrest.
A couple reported seeing a white male near the Intracoastal waterway several days before July 21, repeatedly appearing to search for the suitcase. Another group of witnesses saw the same male standing near the third suitcase before leaving the area. Further evidence against Lowe was gathered during a search of his home. Blood spatter and drag marks were found throughout the living room, dining room, hallway, bathrooms, and master bedroom. Cleaning supplies with blood spatter were also discovered.
Lowe attempted to reenter his home through a back window while detectives were searching the premises but was stopped. Witnesses also reported seeing Lowe transport a plastic container tote box and noticed a suspicious "trail of soup" leading from his apartment to his sister's apartment upstairs.
A search of his sister's apartment resulted in the discovery of a chainsaw cover and cleaning supplies. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and searched Lowe's storage unit, where they found a bloodied chainsaw with human hair on the saw. Lowe appeared in court on Thursday and was denied bond.
