Hygiene at night markets important to boost tourist confidence

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s tourism sector can be further improved by focusing on cleanliness at night markets, especially those located at popular tourist areas, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

Joniston said efforts to maintain cleanliness must involve all parties, including Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), night market traders, the local community and visitors.

He said night market operators should prioritise cleanliness and food safety to ensure a safer, more comfortable and trusted environment for the public and tourists.

“Cleanliness must be given serious attention as it not only affects the image of the business, but also has an impact on the health of consumers and customers,” he said.

Joniston said the Api-Api Night Market at Jalan Gaya’s participation in the Clean Night Market Campaign showed the potential of night markets as not only economic hubs but also platforms to showcase Sabah’s local culture and food.
