PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he is open to discussions with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on working together in the next general election (GE15).

“I believe we both share a common goal and if I have to make the first move, I will do it,” said Mahathir in a video posted on social media.

He said some might label him shameless for reaching out to Anwar but this did not bother him.

“The most important thing is that we (work together to) stop those who are trying to destroy the country,” he said.

Mahathir also recounted when he and Anwar, his former protege, joined forces before GE14, culminating in Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) victory in the polls.

Their alliance proved short-lived as cracks began to emerge over succession plans in which Mahathir was supposed to hand over power to Anwar within an unspecified timeframe.

This ultimately led to the collapse of the PH-led government just 22 months after it came to power.

Mahathir’s remarks today come just two days after the Pejuang chairman said there is a possibility his party could work with PH’s rival, Perikatan Nasional, in GE15.
