Selangor executive councillor Ng Suee Lim has clarified that he did not issue any directive to immediately ban pets from entering shopping malls in the state.

His statement comes after media reports raised concerns over whether malls would be allowed to remain pet-friendly, especially amid confusion about related guidelines.

Ng explained that current rules under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 prohibit animals from entering areas where food is prepared or served.

Hence, many shopping malls with restaurants still do not allow pets.

However, he acknowledged that the demand for pet-friendly dining options is growing, and several local councils in Selangor have already drafted guidelines for such setups.

Ng also stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene, safety, and comfort for both pet owners and other visitors.

He noted that if there are no proper management rules in place, it could pose risks to health, safety, and public sensitivity, especially for non-pet owners.

He clarified that his recent remarks to the media were not a directive for malls to implement a ban but rather a reminder of existing health laws.

He encouraged mall operators and local councils to hold discussions to create inclusive spaces for everyone.

I hope we can create a harmonious environment where pets are welcome, people feel safe, and businesses can operate smoothly,” he added.
