If you watch the parliamentary debate from time to time, you’ll be aware of how intense the debate can get at times, to the point where the Speaker has to “invite” the politicians out of the hall to calm their nerves.

In his Facebook post yesterday (February 26), Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has a reminder for all politicians – to behave themselves.

“Sometimes, I’m embarrassed”

The 1st Parliamentary session for 2024 started yesterday and is expected to go on until March 27, according to the official website of the Malaysian Parliament. Now, what happens if the Members of Parliament (MPs) get themselves into intense disputes again?

The King has given the Speaker the greenlight to ban anyone from entering the hall for 14 days if they are found violating the rules again.

“I would like to remind you that Parliament is where lawmakers like all of you here gather to establish rules. It’s illogical if the lawmakers themselves fail to follow the rules,” Agong said.

Sultan Ibrahim also reminded all MPs to maintain good behavior and a good reputation while being in the Hall by maintaining discipline and using polite language. The King did not try to sugarcoat what he had on his mind about the behaviors of some politicians in the past.

“If you look at the behaviour of MPs before, even I feel embarrassed to enter this place.”

The King has spoken, and we truly hope the leaders of Malaysia will set a prime example to the people who are (always) watching.
