Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad stated that he is prepared to face tycoon Tan Sri Halim Saad's lawsuit in court since he has "nothing to hide," but questioned the timing of the businessman's lawsuit against him.
According to Malay Mail, Dr. Mahathir said his counsel informed him that Halim had sued him, former minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, and the Malaysian government in the past for allegedly instructing the businessman to sell United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) Bhd and Renong Berhad with no profit to Halim.
"Halim Saad also claimed that he did not agree with those instructions, but I had abused my authority in 2001 to force him to relinquish control. He claimed UEM and Renong were his, and that I had violated his constitutional rights. He wants to be compensated," Dr. Mahathir said.
"I will defend myself in court through my lawyer. I have nothing to hide," he said.
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, has questioned the timing of Tan Sri Halim Saad's legal action against him.
According to The Star, Dr. Mahathir remarked in a statement that the tycoon's claim perplexed him.
“Why didn't he take action against me all this time, but now chooses to do so as the election approaches?”
"It's just that this suit is a bit strange because he had also tried to sue former finance minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop and Khazanah Nasional Bhd but failed because the court threw out his case in 2013," he said, revealing that he had received the legal notice.
Dr Mahathir, who appeared unmoved by the complaint, stated that he will respond to the allegations in court through his lawyers because he had nothing to hide.
According to reports, Halim filed a lawsuit against Dr. Mahathir and Nor Mohamed, claiming compensation for financial losses incurred as a result of the government's purchase of UEM Bhd and Renong.
