KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that he will meet with Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after Aidiladha, which falls tomorrow, to discuss cooperation through the Malay Proclamation.
“I will explain to him about the Proclamation of the Malays,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference here today.
FMT had yesterday reported Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, as saying that he will meet Mahathir to discuss the 97-year-old’s Malay Proclamation soon.
Mahathir was formerly Bersatu’s chairman while Muhyiddin was its president, before the former quit as chairman in February 2020. Muhyiddin later took over the post of prime minister which had been occupied by Mahathir since the general election of May 2018.
Muhyiddin said that while the Malay Proclamation was important, the focus should be on measures that need to be taken to realise the aims of the document.
“I have read the 12 points listed in the Malay Proclamation document,” he was quoted as saying. “To me, that is something we (Bersatu) stand for, it is the foundation of our struggles.”
On May 4, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had revealed that he and several leaders of the party had signed the Malay Proclamation in the presence of Dr Mahathir.
Dismissing the government’s supposed pluralist views on nation-building, Hadi also claimed that many Malays in the government have been “duped” into becoming a placeholder by vested parties who seek to control the government.
“Despite him (Dr Mahathir) having wronged PAS repeatedly in the past, many similarities must be considered, including working together for the sake of Islam, race, and nation.
“Among the discussions involved included the need for Malay-Muslim unity (as the community) makes up the majority of this multicultural country,’’ he had said in his Minda Presiden column on Facebook. – The Vibes, June 28, 2023
