A damning national investigation into NHS maternity practices has found multiple glaring issues within hospital wards, namely unsafe wards and racism towards patients. One of the findings from the report was that women of colour were stereotyped and denied painkillers by staff.

For fitness expert and founder of ‘Strong Like Mum’ Shakira Akabusi, the outcome of the report is disturbing, but not surprising, as she was denied medication after a cesarian section for one of her own births.

Shakira Akabusi is the founder of fitness channel Strong Like Mum, created in collaboration with The Independent to provide health and fitness videos on pre- and postnatal care, staying fit during motherhood, and navigating perimenopause and beyond.
