KUALA LUMPUR – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has formally retracted the defamatory remarks he made against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in November 2022, following a settlement in Anwar's defamation lawsuit.
In a joint statement issued by both leaders, it was confirmed that they had agreed to resolve their personal dispute and redirect their attention to more urgent national issues.
"To prevent any confusion arising from this matter, both parties have agreed to publicly retract the statements made in order to clear the air and preserve a respectful and professional relationship," the statement read.
As part of the settlement, Anwar agreed to withdraw his civil lawsuit without seeking costs or the right to refile. In turn, Sanusi pledged not to repeat the statements that formed the basis of the legal action.
The statement also expressed gratitude to Alor Setar High Court Judge Dr Mohd Johan Lee for his mediation efforts, which were essential in achieving the resolution. Both leaders expressed hope that the settlement would be respected and upheld by all parties involved.
Anwar had filed the defamation lawsuit in December 2022 over remarks made by Sanusi during a ceramah in support of Perikatan Nasional's candidate for Tambun, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu. In his speech, Sanusi had accused Anwar of being a fraud, untrustworthy, and betraying the people’s mandate. He also questioned the legitimacy of Anwar’s full pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and claimed that Anwar was a criminal whose offence remained on record. Additionally, Sanusi attacked Anwar's character, calling him "out of akhlak" and a poor example of a Muslim.
The speech, which garnered widespread attention after being shared online, led to public outcry and prompted Anwar to demand an apology, retraction, and compensation for the harm caused. Initially, Sanusi’s legal team stood by the statements, but with this settlement, the matter is now considered closed.
Anwar stated that the remarks had caused him significant distress, tarnishing his public image and causing emotional and mental strain. With the settlement now in place, both leaders have chosen to move forward, leaving the past behind.
